Cutting cash-on-delivery returns with AI confirmation calls

Unconfirmed cash-on-delivery orders turn into returned parcels and wasted courier fees. Here is how an AI voice agent confirms every order in Urdu or English before it ships.

Cash on delivery is still how a large share of online shoppers in Pakistan prefer to pay. It builds trust with buyers, but it shifts the risk to the seller. When a COD parcel is refused or nobody is home, you pay the courier both ways and the stock sits in transit.

Many stores already call customers to confirm orders before dispatch. The problem is that it takes hours of someone's day, it stops at night and on weekends, and it is the first thing that gets skipped when the team is busy.

What an AI confirmation call does

As soon as an order comes in, the agent calls the customer and:

  • Confirms the items, the total and that payment is cash on delivery.
  • Reads back the delivery address and corrects it if needed.
  • Takes notes such as "deliver after 5pm" or "call before arriving".
  • Marks the order as confirmed, changed or cancelled in your store or sheet.
  • Sends a WhatsApp message with the details or tracking number.

It does this in Urdu, English or the mix the customer uses, and it does it at the same quality for the first order of the day and the five hundredth.

Why calling beats a message alone

A WhatsApp or SMS confirmation is cheaper, but many customers never reply, and a missing reply tells you nothing. A short call gets a clear yes or no, catches wrong addresses while the customer is still on the line, and filters out fake orders before you pay to ship them.

The best setups use both: a call first, and a WhatsApp follow-up when the customer does not pick up.

What you need to set it up

  1. Order data from Shopify, WooCommerce, another platform with an API, or a Google Sheet.
  2. A phone number for outbound calls.
  3. Your rules: how many retries, what time of day to call, when to cancel.
  4. A script in your voice, tested by your team before customers hear it.

Measuring whether it works

Before you switch it on, note your current return rate and how many hours your team spends on confirmation calls. Check the same two numbers after a month. That tells you plainly whether it paid off, without relying on anyone's impression.

Questions people ask

Why do cash-on-delivery orders get returned?

Common reasons are fake or impulse orders, wrong addresses, customers who are unreachable on delivery day, and buyers who changed their mind. A confirmation call before dispatch catches many of these.

Can an AI agent make the confirmation calls instead of my team?

Yes. An AI voice agent can call each new order, confirm the items, total and address in Urdu or English, take delivery notes, and mark the order confirmed or cancelled in your store.

Which stores does this work with?

Anything with an API or webhooks, including Shopify and WooCommerce. If orders live in a Google Sheet, that works too.

What happens if the customer does not answer?

The agent retries on a schedule you set, can send a WhatsApp message instead, and flags the order for your team if it still cannot reach the customer.
