AI voice agents in Urdu and English: what they can do today

A plain guide to AI phone agents that speak Urdu, English and the mix in between: what works well, where the limits are, and how to launch one without annoying your customers.

An AI voice agent is software that answers or makes phone calls and holds a real conversation. It listens, understands what the caller wants, replies out loud, and takes an action: booking a slot, confirming an order, answering a question or passing the call to a person.

For businesses in Pakistan and across South Asia, the question is never just "does it work". It is "does it work in Urdu, and does it cope when the caller switches to English halfway through a sentence". Here is an honest answer.

How a voice agent works

Every call runs through the same loop, many times a minute:

  1. Listening. Speech recognition turns the caller's voice into text.
  2. Understanding. A language model reads the text, works out what the caller wants, and decides what to say or do next, using your business information.
  3. Acting. If needed, it checks or updates another system: your calendar, your store, your CRM.
  4. Speaking. Voice generation turns the reply into natural speech.

The whole loop needs to happen in about a second, or the call feels robotic. That speed is now achievable, which is why voice agents have become practical for ordinary businesses.

Urdu, English and the mix

Urdu support in speech recognition and voice generation has improved a lot. For everyday business calls it is good enough to use with customers. English is stronger still.

The real challenge is code-switching. A typical caller says something like "Ji, but delivery 5 baje ke baad karna." A good agent understands that sentence as one thought and replies in the same register. A poor one gets confused or answers in stiff, formal Urdu nobody actually speaks on the phone.

This is why testing matters more than the model you pick. Before launch, the agent should hear real phrases from your real customers, including accents from different cities, and its replies should be tuned until they sound like your business.

What voice agents are good at

  • Customer support FAQs: order status, timings, prices, return policy.
  • Order confirmation: calling cash-on-delivery customers before dispatch.
  • Appointment booking: clinics, salons, consultants, with reminders.
  • Lead qualification: calling new enquiries within minutes and asking the right questions.
  • After-hours cover: nights, weekends and holidays, when nobody is at the desk.

Where the limits are

  • Angry or complex callers should reach a person. A good agent recognises this and transfers the call with a summary.
  • Regional languages such as Punjabi, Sindhi and Pashto are weaker than Urdu and English and need careful testing.
  • Very noisy lines reduce accuracy, as they do for human agents.
  • It only knows what you give it. If your prices or policies are unclear, the agent will be unclear too.

How to launch one well

  1. Start with one call type that repeats often, such as order confirmation.
  2. Write down the questions callers actually ask, in the words they use.
  3. Decide clearly when the agent must hand over to a person.
  4. Test with your own team calling in, in Urdu, English and both.
  5. Go live, read the transcripts every week, and keep improving.

Questions people ask

Can an AI voice agent speak Urdu?

Yes. Current speech recognition and voice models handle Urdu well enough for customer calls such as order confirmation, appointment booking and support FAQs. Quality depends on the voice model chosen and on testing with real callers before launch.

Can it handle callers who mix Urdu and English?

Yes, and it has to. Most callers in Pakistan switch between Urdu and English in the same sentence. A well-built agent understands the mix and replies in the caller's style instead of forcing one language.

What about Punjabi, Sindhi or Pashto?

Support for regional languages is weaker than for Urdu and English. It can work for simple flows, but it needs careful testing with real speakers before you promise it to customers.

Should the agent say it is an AI?

Yes. Introducing it as a virtual assistant is honest and, in our experience, callers care far less than businesses expect as long as the call is short and solves their problem.
